WHEN it was built, Malmesbury Abbey was one of the largest buildings in the land, and one of the most lovely.
A monastery was first established on the site in 676AD, and what remains
of the present building dates from the 12th Century.Now partly in ruins, the ancient abbey is still a magic place for many. Music has been heard in the abbey on summer evenings, when it is said that a group of people can be seen standing at the back of the abbey, listening for the sound of a ghostly organ. Some people have even described the music as a thin, reedy sound, just audible on the evening air. A monk has also been seen to be wandering amongst the gravestones at dawn, as though he was searching for something. |
