LYDIARD House is reputed to be haunted by a gentlemanly ghost, Baronet John St John.

The house, about three miles from Swindon, belonged to the St John family from the first half of the 15th Century until the 20th Century.

John St John was made a baronet in 1611 and was rumoured to have died of old age in his 60s.

A staunch royalist, he lost three sons in the Civil War in the service of the King.

His ghost has been spotted in the house and in its grounds. In recent times, a group of pensioners were picnicking in the grounds and one old lady couldn't find a seat.

Sir John appeared and guided her to a seat none had spotted. She thought he was a lovely gentleman and most courteous.

In 1989, Joyce Ingram, then caretaker of the house said: "You can always tell when he's around.

"The temperature drops dramatically, I get goosepimples and sometimes he has a distinctive sweet and sickly smell.

"It could be the smell of decay I suppose - he has been dead since 1648."
