A YOUNG Cirencester couple have been frightened out of their home by a poltergeist.

Sceptics may scoff at stories of ghosts and spirits, and in the bright light of day it is easy to laugh at such things. But 19-year-old Julie Finch and her husband, Tony, 20, are convinced that something supernatural came into their lives - and they do not think it is at all funny.

'I felt as if there was something behind me all the time, but of course there was nothing to see,' says Julie. There were other eerie happenings at the flat in Doughton Manor, near Tetbury, where the couple set up home just two months after they were married.

Things started to happen about two weeks after they moved in. 'Tony saw one of my dresses move from a chair, go around the room a couple of times and then disappear out of the windows,' says Julie.

Another time Tony was taking down some curtains and as he dragged them across the room it felt as though someone or something was standing on the trailing edge pulling them back. They were not being caught by anything sticking out of the floor so Tony just shouted at whatever was there and then they moved easily,' said Julie.

Tins can have rattled and taps have mysteriously started running in the middle of the night at the 300-year-old house. The couple have also heard a scraping, thumping noise coming along the corridor.

'Whatever it is, I think it is crippled,' says Julie who is now staying with Tony with friends in Ermin Place, Cirencester. Whatever was causing things to go bump in the night, Julie is convinced the flat was haunted and was so frightened that she refused to stay there alone.

Because of Julie's fears, Tony stayed away from work and so lost his job through absenteeism. Other people living in the old house have not heard or seen anything unusual but Julie stresses she is not imagining things.

'I did not believe in ghosts before these things started happening - but I do now.' She says they are trying to look for somewhere else to live.
