WITH the season of macabre tales and spine-chilling brushes with the supernatural just around the corner, pupils of Commonweal School, Swindon, are ghost-hunting again.

No doubt many readers will be interested to hear how the last team of researchers fared after their appeal through this column in May for information on hauntings to help with a school project.

The pupils, Pat Rumbelow, Alexander Gale, Linda Compton, Susan Copus and John Salter, heard from several people with advice and interesting stories though there were no real opportunities for ghost-laying.

They included an astral-traveller (somebody who claims body and spirit can be separated without death), a woman who believed she had seen a ghost and an official of a religious psychical research group.

As the 17-year-old investigators later reported to fellow pupils, they interviewed several people and also delved into the ghost files at the reference library and Newspaper House.

The result was several closely written sheets detailing reported hauntings and poltergeists in Swindon and the surrounding area. They varied from the strange affair at a Penhill council house in 1966 to a mysterious 'red lady'Õ of Hinton Manor.

The woman with the ghostly tale told the pupils of the time she lived in Deacon Street, Swindon, and met an old woman continually standing there who said she was waiting for her dead son, killed in a motor-cycle accident.

Later one night - and she insisted she was not dreaming - the story-teller saw the old woman again gliding along the pavement about a foot off the ground. It seems that the old woman died about the time her ghost was seen.
