First published in March 3, 1988 Grave riddle of naked ghost Devizes residents are baffled by a naked "ghost" who has haunted the area around St John's churchyard. Several local people have been startled by the sight of a man wearing only his shirt wandering through the area towards the old railway bridge late at night. One woman, who does not want to be named, said she and her boyfriend were on their way home to Hillworth Road after visiting a friend when they saw what they thought was a ghost sitting on the gravestones. "We were absolutely petrified. Then the figure came towards us and we saw he was wearing only a light coloured shirt. We just ran. He did not speak but seemed very unsteady on his feet." The woman thought he was just drunk and did not tell the police, but the next day other neighbours in the Hillworth Road area reported seeing a naked man crouched in the churchyard. A spokesman for the police said they had no reports of a streaker in the area but urged anyone who saw the naked man to come forward. Back to 1988 index |
