Truth may never be known

IT sounds like a fairy story and we shall now probably never know whether it's true. The land which contains a maze of tunnels, in which monks of St Mary's Church, Rodbourne Cheney, were reputed to have buried a golden altar, now has acres of houses built on it.

But 70 years ago the tale of the gem-studded altar caused a national stir when it was featured in the Daily Express, together with a ghost story involving the murder of a Church of England curate at an old rectory near Blunsdon Abbey.

Could the two have been linked? The two-pronged tale was sent to Yesterdays by 69-year-old Lorna Dawes, who worked as a shorthand typist at Swindon railway works before she retired in 1984.

Lorna, who was a pupil at Gorse Hill School during World War Two, also belonged to Thamesdown Archaeology Society. She and local historian Jean Allen both wonder whether the tunnels could actually be part of or lined with the site of the Roman archaeological remains at Abbey Meads.

Jean, of the Swindon Society, believes the golden altar is just a tall tale. Lorna isn't committing herself on it. 'I am not into the business of treasure hunting, but I am intrigued by the legends,' she wrote.

'It might be interesting to find out if other people know of them. 'Could there be connections between the Roman site, Blunsdon Abbey and St Mary's Church - or is it all just silly tales?'
