WHENEVER the Jowett family gets together there is a good chance an uninvited guest will come too.

For the 400-year-old barn that is now Pinks Restaurant at Fairford, is host to a ghost - especially if Nicola and Sally are around. It seems that the sisters, both in their twenties, spark off the extra something which manifests the wraith, a tall, dark, bearded, bald man, wearing a leather tabard and carrying a musket.

One evening in early December the family was at dinner. There was music and a deal of chatter when above the sounds, Nicola heard footsteps. The slow purposeful strides mounted the steps outside the barn which lead to a balcony overlooking the dining area.

She went to investigate and saw a balcony door open and a tall shadowy figure glide through. Sally Jowett, who lives at the family home next to the restaurant, sees the ghost regularly and says he is very solid. Once, working in the servery she glimpsed a figure out of the corner of her eye, and asked what he wanted.

There he stood, she says, Bald with a beard, and tall wearing a kind of soldier's uniform. The story goes that during the time of Cromwell the area was the scene of bloody battle and that the soldier has been searching for someone or something ever since.

Other members of the family have seen the ghost, and a youngster once asked what Grandpa was doing up on the balcony, Her grandpa has a beard too.

Head waitress Kate Woolley tells of cake leaping off a table as she was serving. The party moved table and still food was thrown about. Sally says that she feels extremely cold just before the ghost appears but not frightened so much as uneasy as she is taken with a feeling of sadness.
