First Published September 6 1977 A COUPLE who claimed a poltergeist frightened them from their home were imagining things, according to the owners of the 17th century house. 'I have lived here for 20 years,' said Mrs Desiree Ingall, 'and I have never felt not heard nor seen anything at all. It is a very happy house in fact.' This view is shared by Mrs Caroline Murphy who lives in the neighbouring flat to Tony and Julie Finch. They claimed that a poltergeist was disrupting their lives. Mrs Murphy has lived in the house for five months and has heard nothing strange in that time. 'I like it here,' she said. Her five-week-old son Paul sleeps peacefully, undisturbed by 'eerie' happenings. Mr and Mrs Finch, who are now living with friends in Ermin Place, Cirencester, left Doughton Manor, near Tetbury, after apparently being haunted. Tony Finch, 20, claimed he saw one of his wife's dresses fly around the bedroom and then disappear out of the window. His 19-year-old wife, Julie said she heard a scraping thumping noise in the corridor of the old house. The couple also claimed they heard and saw other weird things and although they denied they were imagining things, Mrs Ingall says they must have been. Her own daughter has slept in the supposedly haunted bedroom and she herself sleeps in the room below and has never been wakened by things going bump in the night. The house is featured in the book on West Country houses and it is described as having an uneventful history. 'There is no mention of ghosts of hauntings,' said Mrs Ingall. Back to 1977 index |
