Spook book in the right spirit

Headless dogs, tortured widows and spooky spectres - Wiltshire has the lot according to a ghost-hunter's handbook just published. The Good Ghost Guide lists more than 1,000 supernatural legends and unexplained phenomena around the country.

It is a bible for fans of phantoms and according to the detailed entries, local spooks are plentiful. Ancient mystical sites Avebury and Stonehenge have their own sections as many might have predicted, but did you know about the ugly dwarf supposedly the spirit of an evil monk, that prowls a churchyard in Corsham?

Or the faceless ghost at St Michael's Church, Highworth, seen as often during daylight as in the dead of night?

Or even the annual outing of the ghost of Lady Blunt in the grounds of Lydiard Park, who witnessed her fiancee being brutally murdered 200 years ago?

There are also legends relating to ghosts at Longleat and Littlecote and a host of others in the county.

Author John Brooks, who has written several ghost books in the past, travelled the length and breadth of the country, digging up ancient myths and gathering information on reported sightings.

But he confesses to never having seen a ghost, although he has felt the presence of one. "Working alone at Warwick Castle, I encountered a feeling of intense cold when walking through the Bogey Room which, admittedly, I knew to be haunted.

"I am positive that ghosts exist, but have found no completely convincing answer as to how this can be."

The Good Ghost Guide, published by Jarrolds, is now available from bookshops, priced £8.99.
