HIGHWORTH has suddenly become a ghost town.

The people are still there, of course, but the number of spiritual inhabitants is growing daily. For since Richard Nelms landlord of the King and Queen Inn, reported his sighting of a monk in his own backyard he has been flooded with tales of other strange sights and happenings in Highworth.

Among these is a letter from Mrs L Bowles of Cricklade Road, Swindon, which describes a haunting in Church Street, Highworth, many years ago. Mrs Bowles has a brother called George Harris who married Nellie, the daughter of Mr & Mrs Newman who lived in Church Street.

'Nellie would never sleep in the back bedroom, as she said she had seen a monk there,' wrote Mrs Bowles, 'so her mother stayed in the room with her one night and they heard someone coming into the room. They both fled, and they always kept the bedroom boarded up after that.'

The monk apparently, would rise through the floorboards from a tunnel which was said to lead to the churchyard. Mrs Betty New, who works at the King and Queen also recalls that the table in a house at the end of Highworth High Street, used to rise of its own accord, and candles would snuff themselves out. The house says Mrs New was occupied by hippies at on time but is now boarded up.

Another letter to Mr Nelms came from as far away as Surrey, this time assuring him that he had seen an Abbe, who was a very peaceful, friendly ghost and would not harm anyone.

Meanwhile, other ghost enthusiasts have come to Highworth personally to chat to Mr Nelms about what he has seen. 'A major and his wife travelled up from Sussex to discuss it with me,' he said, 'and I was assured by them that such spirits exist - the major told me he had seen many peculiar sights in India, where he did service.'

Most of the local stories seem to hinge upon the legendary tunnels which are supposed to criss-cross Market Square, Highworth and which are said to lead out from the church.

The ghost itself, or at least the one haunting the King and Queen, is having a quiet, inconspicuous 'life' at the moment. He has not been seen for more than a month and as Richard Nelms said last Monday: 'That's quite all right by me.'
