Strange happenings have plagued the landlords at the White Lion

A SERIES of unexplained incidents at a Cricklade pub have sparked claims of ghostly intervention. Tenants Linda Turner and Steve Sutton took over the running of the White Lion Pub seven months ago.

Since moving in they have experienced a run of accidents and strange happenings Ð leading them to speculate about influences from beyond the grave. The run of bad luck started just three days after the couple moved in to the Alehouse-owned pub, when Steve fell down the stairs and broke both legs.

'We thought it was an unfortunate accident, but that was just the start,' said Linda. Shortly afterwards the electricity supply at the pub failed. And despite the problem being fixed, the pub is still occasionally plunged into darkness without any explanation.

'We have had wiring looked at by electricians but they can't find anything wrong with it,' said Linda. 'I am totally convinced that the pub is haunted.

'I have never seen the ghost, but when I am lying in bed at night, I can hear stomping sounds on the stairs and I often hear sounds coming from areas of the pub that have been locked off.' The ghostly goings-on even extend into the kitchen.

'Sometimes when my partner Steve is working in the kitchen, he finds that utensils and food have been moved around while his back has been turned,' said Linda. 'It is really strange.' Over the months the unexplained happenings continued apace, with appliances, including an electric kettle, two washing machines for washing glasses and a television breaking down, seemingly without reason.

'No sooner did we repair one thing than the next thing needs fixing,' she added. The list goes on, the central heating boiler failed, followed by the dishwasher, the washing machine and to cap it all, rain began to leak through three holes in the roof.

Things seemed to have returned to normal recently allowing Linda and Steve to get on with running the pub and the award winning on-site Italian restaurant. 'We have been in the business for more than 20 years and we have never come across anything like this before,' said Linda. 'I am just pleased that the problems seemed to have stopped.'
