First Published March 11 1977 A CALNE solicitor who died half a century ago could be the ghost which haunts the Calne Marden Court home for the elderly. The home stands on land which once formed part of the grounds of Castlefields, Calne, where solicitor Mr Bertram Spackman once lived. Mr Bill Edwards, who worked for the late Mr Spackman, says the description of the mystery figure with a stoop, wearing a dark grey suit and carrying a walking stick which has been seen by Marden Court staff, is fitting. Said Mr Edwards: 'He was a recluse. Apart from holding the occasional croquet party in his garden he never used to mix socially. His wife, Edith, was the first woman mayor of Calne. Mr Spackman died of a heart attack.' Although it has long since been taken over, the Calne solicitorÕs business in Patford Street with which he was associated, still bears the original name of Spackman, Dale and Hood.
