First published in April 11, 1991 Alfie hasn't the ghost of a chance. Alfie the ghost does not exist. He has turned out to be a She - a very much alive resident of Swindon many years ago. Last week the Evening Advertiser featured a story about Alfie haunting the Health Hydro in Swindon's Milton Road. Staff were convinced that the lovable spook was not a figment of their imaginations - and they had a photograph to prove it. The print, believed to date back to the 1930's has been enlarged and is on display at the Milton Road building. It features "Alfie" in the bottom right corner. He has spindly legs and arms, but no head. Workers assumed that he was the companion of a nameless woman ghost who speaks to people at the Hydro. But Evening Advertiser reader Eric Dunsdon, of Hythe Road, Swindon has proved them wrong. He became fascinated after seeing the photograph in our story. "It just did not seem right," he said. "There was a pattern conveniently covering the photograph where you supposed ghost was standing." "I looked through a magnifying glass and picked out two figures, a man and a woman." Eric keeps a scrap book of old photographs published in the Evening Advertiser. He looked in his book and found a clearer copy of the enlarged photograph of the Hydro which was published in the Evening Advertiser in 1988. It shows that "Alfie" is an old woman stooping by the pavement. "Alfie the ghost does not exist," said Eric. "The ghost turned out to be a very much alive woman." And he apologised for disappointing the staff at the Hydro. Back to 1991 index |
