First Pubished July 12 1978 In the Adver last week we reported how the manager's flat above W H Smiths in High Street, Marlborough, had been haunted. Graham May, who was manager of the store until last week, and his wife regularly heard odd noises. Footsteps in the night and breathing when no one was there, led the couple to call in police on several occasions. Eventually the spook left after Mr May's father-in-law, a Methodist minister, told the couple how to get rid of it by chanting Psalm 91. But W H Smiths good fortune has turned out to be not quite such good luck for Dewhurst's butchery staff - the ghost has moved in with them. Now it's the turn of Dewhurst's to hear these footsteps. Dry goods manager, Ken Maunder of Wroughton, said: 'I was in my office late one night counting some money when I heard these footsteps coming up the passageway towards the office. 'I grabbed a bag of silver ready to chuck at whoever it was. All of a sudden the footsteps stopped and I cautiously peeped around the door, but there was no one there.' Ken Fry, the butcher manager, who lives at Eldene, Swindon has heard footsteps and other odd noises when he has been alone in the building. Most of the staff joke about their visitor but one lad, who no longer works for the firm, was rather scared. Mr Fry said: 'He came in early one morning about 5am to cut the meat. When we got here he was huddled in a corner as white as a sheet and had been chain smoking, we could see from all the cigarettes around him. 'He was frightened out of his wits. He told us he had heard banging then the flush going in the toilet although he knew he was the only one here. He was in a right state.' Another young member of staff claimed he had felt someone, of something, grip his arm. The couple living in the flat over the store have heard noises and called in pest control men. But it's not just a question of an old building creaking. That would not explain the toilet flushing, which Mr Fry has also heard when he has been alone in the office at night. Ken Maunder says: 'My cold goods store is padlocked at night and often I get here to find the padlock has been opened. 'To get to it anyone would have to get through a door which is also kept locked.' Ken Fry,added: 'Whatever it is seems to be friendly. I don't feel uneasy about it although I heard noises which no on could explain. Back to 1978 index |
