First Published January 13 1970 WHEN 'last orders' was called last night at the New Inn, Cromwell Street, Swindon, landlord Eric Marvell really meant it. From today no one will set foot inside the pub again, except the demolition men and an under-age ghost. The pub is going to have to be demolished to make way for SwindonÕs new shopping centre after being open and serving drinks for more than 120 years. For all of its life it has belonged to Arkells, the Kingsdown brewers and in fact, was one of their first public houses. In its place, in a few years time, there will be a new New Inn as part of the Brunel centre but the locals know that it will not have the character of the old New Inn, where people once brought their horses into the bar to sell them. Mr Marvell, the manager, his wife Ena, and their four children, are moving to The Plough at Badbury, where he will be a tenant. Mr Marvell says they are sorry to be leaving their friends in the town and the ghost. He adds: 'Once I woke up and saw this little kid standing on the pillow. And my wife has got up in the middle of the night, because she has heard our children on the landing but when she looked out of our bedroom there was nothing.' Back to 1970 index |
