SPOOKY goings-on in Corsham could soon be the focus of a new television show putting Wiltshire ghosts and legends in the spotlight.

Staff working at the Tourist Information Centre in High Street believe two ghosts are haunting the 800-year-old building.

Unexplained events have been on the increase at the TIC with manager Martin Yallop convinced the phenomenon is down to restless spirits.

Electronic counter devices designed to measure the number of customers in the shop go off for no reason, lightbulbs are constantly blowing and strange creaking noises can be heard above the ceiling.

The spooky events could soon be featured in a new TV show on Wiltshire ghosts and legends, currently being researched and produced by ex-HTV newsreader Richard Wyatt. The identity of the Corsham ghouls is still uncertain but Mr Yallop said he believes they are the spirits of ex-Lacock Mill owner William Arnold and Corsham Scrooge-style millionairess Miss Pictor.

He said: "Miss Pictor was the last remaining member of one of Corsham's great quarry-owning families.

"She lived in the building and used to sit up in the window upstairs watching people go past. Apparently she was a bit too careful with her money and died leaving millions of pounds.

"We always know when they are around. The electronic counter device will go off repeatedly even though no-one is coming into the shop. "It is not an unpleasant experience. I don't think they are malevolent spirits.

"We first noticed the strange noises when we opened three years ago. You can hear more things when you are working here alone.

"We have offered the TV producers one or two stories but they are also looking for legends in the area. "The show is still in progress at the moment."

Mr Yallop said there have also been reports of a disembodied Roman soldier stalking a cottage in Monks Park.

Ghostly sightings have been reported in nearby Box with a phantom train heard going through the abandoned tunnel.

In Lacock there has been a multitude of ghost reports including a heartbroken nun stalking Bewley Court and a mysterious old lady seen sitting at a table at the Sign Of The Angel pub.

Anyone with a spooky story or legend in Corsham can report their experiences to Corsham Tourist Information Centre on (01249) 714660.
