THE mystery of a phantom flier has sparked an astonishing ghost story at a top research establishment.

Rumours are sweeping Metal Box at Grove, near Wantage, after eerie late-night sightings of a figure clothed in full flying gear, including an oxygen mask.

Scientists working in the most complicated inventions for the food-packing industry are baffled by the phenomenon. Workers are so fascinated by the story that the company newspaper has devoted half a page in its latest issue posing the question: "Is Wantage haunted?

The story is based on claims from more than one person of a ghost sighted around the establishment, which was built on the site of the former 1939-45 war airfield at Grove.

Apart from the flying suited figure, workers have reported that 'a presence' has been felt in a certain area at the rear of the works. The company has entered into the spirit of the thing and brought old site drawings out of mothballs.

The plans show that the 'ghost' has been seen near the old wartime chapel and site of the officers mess. The more sceptical believe the issue may be clouded by someone flying high after spending too much time in the works social club.

A Metal Box official said: "It is fascinating, but then all ghost stories tend to snowball. "It is not a big hoax, there have been reports but we do not think it fair to identify the people concerned."

The company has been unable to confirm whether a plane actually did crash on the site and would welcome any information from local historians.

A popular story is that the sighting is the ghost of a pilot who crashed his fighter on landing and was killed.
