First published in February 19, 1996 Has photographer snapped a ghost? A photographer received the shock of his life after he snapped a ghost. The spooky image appeared after 24-year old Bryan Miles was inside the old Cannon Cinema in Swindon town centre taking photographs of its conversion into the new Wetherspoons pub. The old cinema has just reopened as the new Savoy pub. When he had one particular photograph developed he noticed a bearded man even though the building was empty at the time. He has had the snap investigated but no-one can give an explanation of what caused it. Bryan of Park North, Swindon said: "I know there was nothing there when I took the photographs as I was the only person in the building." He decided it was not a reflection or a double exposure and now believes he has captured a ghost on film. "I didn't really believe in ghosts until now. Perhaps my outlook will be more open now. I've been taking photographs for ten years and this is the first time that anything like this has happened," he said. Bryan's hobby is photographing old cinemas. When he heard the old Cannon cinema was to be converted and turned into a pub he spent several months in the building taking around 1,500 photographs. He has had strange feelings in the old cinema before. "One day i was sitting on the steps and I saw a shadow go past the light. I looked round and there was nobody there. It was a weird experience." He said two workers converting the building saw something and refused to go back in. He is interested to know who the ghost was. The cinema first opened in 1937 and before that a hotel stood on the site. Adver photographer Dave Evans studied the negative and said there was no evidence it had been tampered with. It was not possible to say whether it was a double exposure although if it was it was unlikely to be confined to one corner of the print. Keith Saunders was a handyman at the Cannon from 1987 until it was closed in 1991. He now works at the MGM in Shaw Ridge. He said the ghost was well known and the called it George. "I never saw anything but heard footsteps walking across the foyer and projection box. "One Sunday I was there and heard the door click and footsteps walk across but there was no-one there." He said there was an idea about organising a seance to draw the spirit out but it never came to anything. Back to 1996 index |
