All eyes peeled for Mrs Bradford

Theatre staff are keeping their eyes peeled after a series of unscripted appearances - by what seems to be a resident ghost.

The spirit, who has become known as Mrs Bradford by staff at the Arts Centre, Devizes Road, Swindon, is thought to be a friendly presence but that doesn't stop staff from feeling just a little bit edgy when they are working in the old building alone.

Julia Dickinson drama animator for the Wyvern Arts Trust, who teached and directs plays at the arts centre, saw the apparition standing in a doorway one night.

Julia carried on along the corridor, passing the figure, and it was not until afterwards that she realised she was the only person downstairs in the building.

By then the figure had disappeared - apparently through a wall. "I thought it was a woman, although i did not see a face," said Julia. "But when I went back whoever it was had gone."

More recently a coffe and lunch shop attendant went to serve a customer in a long dark coat. When she arrived at the table, the customer had disappeared - her only way of escape through a brick wall. Julia has witnessed other strange things happening in the centre.

"There are four different phone numbers in this building and one night they were all ringing simultaneously. "Every time we picked one up, there was an open line, but no one was there.

"Then, one night, as I was going into wardrobe, my dog who was with me started barking and would not walk in there. Later, when we went back with someone else she went in fine, as if nothing had happened." After research by the Evening Advertiser's Down Your Way correspondent Rena Jones, she found the Bradford family were local benefactors listed in the 1830 Swindon directory. In fact the arts centre was called the Bradford Hall until 1955.

But the name Bradford does not appear in the 1851 census for Wood Street - and it is thought Mrs Bradford may have died in a fire.
