First published in July 20, 1988 Spook power is alive and well, says poll It's no spoof- nearly half of Britain believes in spooks! A national survey has laid the ghost once and for all about most people dismissing things that go bump in the night as nonsense. The Opinion Poll, carried out for Weekend magazine, shows almost 50 per cent of the population believes ghosts, ghouls and haunted houses really do exist. "That doesn't suprise me in the least," said local ghost expert Paul Harwood, who spends much of his time studying spooks and UFOs. Paul, of Oaksey Road, Penhill, added: "I know of another survey carried out not so long ago which came up with exactly the same results. "There's a healthy sceptical number of people, but there's not a lot you can say to them because the don't want to listen to you. "But I've seen plenty of people who have been very, very scared indeed by incidents which have happened to them. They are sometimes too scared to talk about it." Another person to back the poll results is Wootton Basset publican Vernon Nation, boss of the Curriers Arms. "Things have certainly happened in this pub, he said. "Paperwork has moved in the past with no-one knowing anything about it. If you put something down on a table you suddenly find it has moved to another place." "Most people you talk to don't laugh about it. They accept what you have to say." Mr Nation said a girl staying in the pub was supposed to have committed suicide and a previous publican died after falling down some stairs. "Our last dog wouldn't go near the toilets where the publican died, so that must say something," said Mr Nation. "They are very sensitive animals, so the dog must have known something." The National Opinion Poll says one on four people believe it is possible to communicate with ghosts. Thamesdown Council admits it sometimes gets calls from tenants who are frightened because they believe their council homes are haunted. "This type of thing does crop up from time to time," said a spokesman. "Tenants do take it reasonably seriously and we look into the matter." He quipped: "I suppose you could say we enter into the spirit of things!" Back to 1988 index |
