Ghost hunt is let down for diver

The grisly truth behind the story of a ghost said to haunt a 17th century pub near Swindon looks set to remain a mystery.

Hundereds of people watched diver Douglas Banks descend into an ancient well inside Avebury's Red Lion on Saturday night.

Mr Banks, a member of Calne Sub-Aqua Club, went in search of bones but surfaced instead with a handful of 1912 coins.

The dive was organised by landlord Trevor Walter. He was intrigued by reports that the pub was haunted by Florrie, a former landlady supposedly murdered by her jealous husband.

"The landlord came back from the Crimea war and found his wife had been unfaithful, so he strangled her and disposed of her body down the well," said Mr Walter.

He says there have been many reports of ghostly sightings and unexplained noises in the pub over the years.

Mr Banks was unable to descend any further than 69ft below the surface due to a boulder which blocked his path.
