First Published Ocotber 20 1972 CANON Christopher Harman, of Compton Beauchamp, has conducted his first personal exorcism - of a Penhill man, with an 'evil spirit' after two doctors had been unable to help. The SOS was sent out by the Samaritan organisation to Canon Harman, 82, of Church Cottage, Compton Beauchamp, Shrivenham. He has exorcised ghosts from a dozen haunted houses since 1935. But this time he was asked to deal with a 30-year-old man convinced he was possessed with an evil spirit. 'I have never been asked to exorcise a person before,' said Canon Harman last night. 'This is the result of his contact with a man dabbling in Black Magic eight years ago. 'He said he had evil visions, and he had attacked his mother and grandmother. Two doctors in Swindon who deal with mental disorders, told him they could do no more for him, and suggested exorcism as a last resort.' Canon Harman said the parish vicar fully co-operated, and was present at the exorcism. Mr Harman said the man had received no further 'visitations' since the exorcism. He said: 'I am still in tough with him, but I am not yet certain if he is permanently cured. I am also not certain to what extend it was a psychological disorder or actual possession. 'I believe very much in ghosts, he added. 'I have attended seances and I saw at least 40 full length apparitions.' Back to 1972 index |
