First published in October 20, 1995 Ghostly goings-on at pub Florrie the Avebury ghost has put the frighteners on ex-Goon Michael Bentine. When Bentine turned up at the Red Lion pub in the High Street, to make a programme of spooky tales for HTV, Florrie left him in no doubt she was displeased. "During the first day's filming four lightbulbs burst, the beer went cloudy and glasses broke," said landlady Anne McCann. "I don't think she liked Michael Bentine very much. Apparently she doesn't like men with beards." When Anne and her husband Pat took over the pub in April, they were told the bearded landlord before last had been shaving when the mirror came off the wall and smashed him in the face. "But she's not malicious at all, just mischievous. And I don't think she likes people making fun of her," said Anne. The couple, who moved to Avebury from Sidmouth in Devon, have been told Florrie's husband returned from the Civil War to find her in bed with another man. The interloper went out of the window and Florrie's husband shoved her down the 82ft deep well under what is now the pool room. Since then, she has made her presense felt by hiding items like mops and, said Pat: "I have felt a presence in the pub. Sometimes there's something which makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up." The HTV programme, called Is There Anyone Out There, will be screened on October 30. Back to 1995 index |
