A former projectionist thinks he has solved the mystery of the haunted cinema.

Dennis Smith was a projectionist for 25 years at the former Cannon cinema in Regent Street, Swindon. On Monday the adver published a photograph showing a ghostly image in the derelict shell of the cinema.

Mr Smith, 64, of Moredon, Swindon, who started work at the cinema in 1947, believes the cinema is haunted by the ghost of a projectionist who died after falling off a ladder.

"I would be sitting in the rest room upstairs when I would hear someone open the door of the projection room, walk through to the rewind room and put a spool on. I would go out to see who it was and there was no-one there."

He said the ghostly footsteps were often heard by staff at the cinema. Keith Saunders who was a handyman at the Cannon for four years said the ghost was well known and staff called it George.

The cinema opened in 1937 but Mr Smith does not know exactly when the accident happened or who the unfortunate projectionist was. "It was most present in the projector room," he said. The cinema closed in 1991 and reopened as The Savoy pub last week.

Bryan Miles, 24, of Park North was taking pictures inside the old cinema during conversion work when he snapped the spooky image of a bearded man.

Does anyone know anything about the projectionist who died, or has anyone had their own ghostly encounter. If so contact the Adver newsdesk on Swindon 528144.
