First published on July 22, 1977 Riddle of the early bird 'silver thing'd UFO spotters haven't had much luck so far in the Wantage area. But all that could change following a possible sighting by a Grove couple. Mr and Mrs K. Francis, who manage a supermarket in Millbrook square, Grove, reckon that the "silvery thing" they saw high in the sky could have been nothing other than an Unidentified Flying Object. "There seems to be no other sensible, logical explanation," said Mr. Francis. "I know people might think you are a bit daft when you say you've seen one of these things, but quite honestly there's nothing else it could have been." What Mr and Mrs Francis saw, as they were woken up by their baby at 6.30 am was "a silvery looking thing, high up in the sky, travelling very slowly." "Then, suddenly," said Mr Francis, "it disappeared. It couldn't have gone into clouds because there weren't any. The sky was quite bright and sunny. I was there one moment and gone the next." Since the sighting the couple have heard from no one else claiming to see the same UFO. "We expected people would come into the shop saying they had seen something similar. But it seems that we were the only ones," added Mr Francis. But, although over the past few years the area has been remarkably bereft of UFO sightings, Mr Francis believes that his experience could now set off a wave of similar claims. "I don't want to dismiss what I saw, but it usually happens that way," he commented. Back to 1977 index |
