ONE of Britain's most haunted pubs, the Red Lion in Avebury, is about to become the subject of a television series researching the nation's fascination with the paranormal.

The new documentary, Most Haunted, is hosted by former Blue Peter presenter Yvette Fielding, and will be shown on cable, satellite and digital channel Living TV from Saturday.

Yvette, parapsychologist Jason Karl and psychic medium Derek Acorah each spent 24 hours alone in the pub trying to communicate with resident ghost Flori, who is said to haunt the property.

According to Yvette's husband, programme producer Karl Beattie, Flori left a scratch mark down the back of his neck, while Yvette woke up screaming after having her hair pulled.

Infra-red cameras also picked up lights flying across the room and the team heard inexplicable noises in the dead of night. Barman Max Milne, 19, said: 'I've never seen the ghost but a lot of people have.

'Its quite a spooky place to work and I'm looking forward to seeing the programme on television.' Legend has it that during the Civil War news reached Flori that her husband, who was away fighting, had been killed.

Rather than wallow in selfpity, Flori soon found another man, but her returning husband discovered the couple amid a passionate clinch. He shot her lover before slitting Flori's throat and throwing her down the well.

Avebury is famous for its stone circle - an eerie World Heritage site dating to prehistoric times. During filming for the programme in January, landlord Richard Bowndes, 26, said: 'Flori has haunted the pub ever since she was murdered by her husband in Cromwellian times.

'She flicks switches, moves keys and bottles and swings on the chandeliers. She even managed to lock us out of the pub when we first arrived by moving a whisky bottle full of cash in front of the door.'

The Red Lion will be featured in the third programme of the series on Sunday, June 2 at 9.30pm and on Tuesday, June 11 at 8.30pm.
