First Published April 24 1997 All is well after a spell of witchery WORRIED patrons at Avebury's Red Lion pub can rest easy. A spell cast on the pub's beer and food appears not to have taken effect as promised after the full moon of Tuesday night. The spell was part of a long running dispute over the existence of 300-year-old ghost Florrie. 'I know Avebury well. I've never known it to be so calm, so peaceful,' said Swindon paranormal investigator Geoff Stanley. Mr Stanley stayed a night at the pub to monitor the authenticity of the spell cast by white witch Kevin Carlyon. Mr Carlyon put the spell on the pub in a effort to get publican Pat McCann to renounce the existence of Florrie. Mr Carlyon insisted he had exorcised Florrie, but the pub still maintained a presence haunted the building. 'We have placed a spell on the pub to stop the misrepresentation of a deceased person being used as a publicity gimmick,' said Mr Carlyon. The spell promised that if Florrie's presence was not denied by the full moon on April 22, the pub's food would go off and the beer would go cloudy. It didn't. 'Nothing happened,' said Mr Stanley. 'The beer didn't go rotten and the food didn't go funny. 'There were a couple of little incidents that could be put down to being slightly more than the normal,' he said. Mr Stanley said the failure of the spell sent a clear message to Mr Carlyon. 'There is no way that this energy is going to be manipulated for bad reasons,' he said, 'Healing energies will not and cannot be manipulated for harm. 'It was so peaceful down there. We actually had a brilliant day out.' Mr McCann was never in any doubt that his beer would go cloudy. He claimed nothing Mr Carlyon ever did worked anyway. But he vowed legal action if the white witch did succeed. But now all can rest easy. The beer is fine, the food is great and the matter is resolved. And Florrie? 'There is a presence there but I can't say whether or not its Florrie,' said Mr Stanley. The Adver was not able to contact Mr Carlyon to get his comments. Back to 1997 index |
