First Published March 25 1998 A lodger who pays no rent ANYONE who lives in an old house gets used to a few creaks. But when things go bump in the night at Neil Montgomery's house in Elmina Road, Swindon, the explanation may not be quite so simple. Neil, 27, moved into the 1890s house four years ago and was looking forward to the peace and quiet of living alone in his first home. It was not to be. 'My ex-girlfriend was staying over one night when she suddenly sat up in bed and started talking to someone,' explained Neil. 'She said it was definitely a man and, although the figure was quite shadowy, she said she could see a Roman helmet. But I couldn't see anything.' Neil forgot all about it - but only for a couple of weeks. One day, when he was chatting at the Link Centre, where he works as an activity assistant, a friend who has stayed at the house suddenly asked Neil if the house was haunted. 'He said he'd felt a cold presence in the room and he really believed there was someone in there with him. 'That was really spooky because I hadn't mentioned anything to him. That's when I started to think there might be something in it.' Since then, there have been enough reports of ghostly goings-on at the house to tax even the most sceptical sceptic. First, Neils's girlfriend Joanne was lying in bed when she suddenly felt paralysed and was convinced a wardrobe was going to fall on her. Then another friend reported seeing a shadowy figure. And a friend's girlfriend also said she'd felt paralysed in the night, as if someone was sitting on top of her. Neil is unconvinced and says nothing will scare him from a house where he loves living.
