First published on February 27, 1996 Ghost encounter left cinema man spooked The ghostly goings-on at a haunted Swindon cinema have been confirmed by a former projectionist who claims to have had a terrifying stand off with the mystery spook. Robert Curtis, who worked at the former Canon Cinema, stared in disbelief as a male figure appeared in the middle of a locked building. "I was on the verge of calling out but then just ran," said Mr Curtis, 27. "I crept back up there an hour later but it had gone." And as well as seeing the apparition Mr Curtis, who worked at the cinema between 1985 and its closure in 1991, also heard the ghoul on "numerous occasions". But nothing matched the terror of his face-to-face meeting with the spook. "My first encounter came one Sunday afternoon when I was alone in the cinema," said Mr Curtis, of Dorcan. "I had been sitting in the back row of Cinema One listening to some music and decided to walk round the auditorium checking the lighting. "When I reached the front I glanced towards the back where to my surprise I saw a man standing directly behind the seat where I had been sitting." The cinema was locked and no members of the public were in the building. Mr Curtis could see neither the features nor the clothes on the male figure. "We stood there intently watching each other for some seconds and I was on the verge of calling out to ask who was there," he said. "But in the end I just ran off and then crept back up there an hour later but it had gone." He also regularly heard the ghost opening doors, walking around the projection room, rewinding film, and moving film cases. His observations come just weeks after the Adver published a photograph that appears to show the image of a ghost. And another former projectionist Dennis Smith also told how he heard similar noises. This all backs up theories that the ghost may have been a projectionist who once worked at the cinema and may have died in an accident. But Mr Curtis says he has checked through newspaper reports and has been unable to find any clue to the mystery. "I would be interested to know of any other experiences over the years," he said. "There must be someone who knows about it." Anyone who may have information should contact the Adver newsdesk on 01793 528144. Back to 1996 index |
