Hunter hopes a spectre calls

GHOSTBUSTER Simon Gough has spent the last ten years chasing spooks but admits he has never seen one. Mr Gough, a landscaper who lives in Rabley Wood View in Marlborough with his wife and son, helped set up a club called Paranormal Research which currently has nine members and is looking for more.

Over the past three years club members, who come from all over the region, have carried out a number of vigils at properties which are believed to be haunted. Since moving to Marlborough, Mr Gough said he had been delighted to hear many tales of haunted buildings including The Sun pub and some other High Street properties.

He said: 'Paranormal Research is a local ghost club consisting of professional people. We formed in 1995 with the aims of researching paranormal activity on a scientific basis.' When club members undertake their vigils in properties believed to be haunted they take with them an array of scientific recording equipment including sensitive thermometers which can detect slight changes in temperature.

Mr Gough said: 'We also gather as much history of the site and case history as we can as we are often restricted on the time we can actually spend at any location. 'Due to this our conclusions can be limited, however surprising and interesting results have been gained.'

He revealed that not all members of his group believe in ghosts but still join in vigil activities in the hopes of getting proof that they exist. 'Our group has varying degrees of belief in the paranormal which we have found is healthy for us,' said Mr Gough.

He added: 'We would like to find more local hauntings to investigate and we encourage residents to participate in our research.' The group hopes to conduct a research vigil at The Sun. Staff at the pub have told Mr Gough they are convinced it has a poltergeist because of strange events which have happened.

One bar worker saw an apparition in a doorway between the kitchen and dining room. Several people working in the pub have reported seeing a woman dressed in Victorian serving or cooking attire. Tourists staying in the pub have reported hearing bumps in the night and one couple who had pre-booked did not bother to ask for their money back when they fled after feeling something foreboding in their room.

Manager Jim Young said: 'In the three years I have been at the pub there have been strange things happening. It does not happen all the time, it goes quiet for maybe a couple of weeks and then several things happen in a week.' Mr Young said one of the strangest occurrences was when a customer returned to the bar and could not find his car keys where he had left them by his drink and cigarettes. 'About ten minutes later the keys just landed in the middle of the bar,' said Mr Young, adding that there was no one close enough to have dropped them as a prank.

He said a previous manager had walked through the restaurant one day at about 9.30am and saw a man at a table. The manager continued into the kitchen and asked staff why the man was not being served only to be told there had been no overnight guests. A further inspection revealed the dining room was empty.

Mr Gough said: 'This does not mean that The Sun is haunted but there is definitely enough to warrant further investigation.' Despite his years of research and taking park in vigils, Mr Gough has yet to see a ghost himself although he said he has felt strange presences during ghost-busting stake-outs.

Anyone who believes they have a resident spook which needs investigating or is interested in paranormal research can contact Mr Gough on (01672) 511395.
