THE great Ramsbury ghost story is a hoax.

Wild rumours have spread through the village about things which were going bump in the night at the old people's residence known as Saxon Forge off the High Street.

We won't stay here, said the old folk, until the ghost is laid. We're not going to pay our rates until it's gone, went the rumour. Well, that story really set Mr Harry Lamperd laughing today.

'It all began when someone knocked on one of the bungalow's doors very late one night and then ran off. 'Someone said, 'Oh that's the ghost.' My wife has even had her leg pulled at work in Hungerford.'

Saxon Forge, was opened in October 1976 and is built as the name suggests on the site of an old Saxon forge. When the bungalows were built, the remains of the civilisation so long ago were dug up, including some bones. At the time of the discovery work was halted while the site was excavated.

It is suggested the ghost of the Saxon blacksmith still lurks in Ramsbury.
