First published in August 31, 1988 Bid to keep the spooky stairwell Planners are being asked to save a flight of stairs where a spook is reputed to re-enact a tragic accident from 100 years ago. Marlborough College is planning to convert one of its boys' boarding units for use by girls in preperation for going fully co-educational in a year's time. The public school is planning to carry out some internal alterations to the building but one councillor wants to see a Victorian stairwell preserved. Formely a scripture teacher at the school, Coun Nick Fogg, who now works as a charity fund raiser, says the stairs are haunted by the ghost of a boy who fell to his death on them a century ago. Councillors agreed to raise no objection to the conversion - which now has to be approved by Kennet Council planners - as long as the old staircase is preserved. Back to 1988 index |
