First Published October 31 2000 Flickering lights, mysterious shadows and sudden drops in temperature in a Highworth pub occur not only at Halloween. Legends surrounding an executed monk haunting the 15th century King and Queen pub, coupled with strange 'goings-on', have convinced manager Jon Champ that the 500-year-old building may be haunted. Taking over the reins at the pub two years ago, a series of unexplained event have left him wondering whether an age-old legend about a murdered monk may be true. Many regulars are convinced stories of a monk sentenced to death in the premises and hung outside in an alleyway are true, with visitors reporting eerie shadows and strange feelings of sudden cold. Mr Champ, 27, who lives in the pub, said his former scepticism over ghosts and ghouls is starting to fade. 'We have had a number of incidents and I have heard lots of stories about a monk haunting the pub. 'Sometimes it is very warm here and the temperature can suddenly drop and you get a cold shudder. There have been flickering lights and sometimes when you turn all the switches off at night you come down in the morning and a light has come back on. 'Some of the regulars have been talking about a chap who went to use the toilets outside and came back as white as a sheet. He couldn't tell them what happened but afterwards said he had seen an apparition. 'When I was here for the first year I didn't believe a thing but would still be worried sometimes at night. It is a very old pub so there are cracks, bangs and groans anyway, but when you see shadows out of the corner of your eye, you start to think.' Intrigued visitors have been descending on the pub in their droves to catch a glimpse of the ghostly apparitions. Two men even asked to stay in a particular room last month in a bid to catch sight of the legendary headless monk. Mr Champ said: 'I don't think it is time for an exorcist, but it is an intriguing part of the history. I am the most sceptical man in the world but I know there is something there. 'The pub was an old coaching inn and the stories say a monk was once hung in the alleyway outside for stealing a loaf of bread. I am sure being a coaching in there have been a lot of unscrupulous people coming through these doors. 'There is so much history here. The attic has not been touched for 150 years and there are still wooden slats on the ceiling with horse hair and dirt ingrained.' Back to 2000 index |
