Chilling visitors

Several ghostly spirits are believed to have taken up residence in a Monkton Farleigh pub.

The Kings Arms, once an 11th century monk's retreat, is said to be haunted by a monk found dead in Ounusual circumstances'. A key was discovered buried in an internal wall during renovations in 1991. To this day no one knows what lock it opens.

After the renovations two elderly gentlemen appeared in the bar and told the barmaid no good would come from knocking down the wall but minutes later they vanished into thin air. Former Landlord Nils Hughes had problems with phantoms disturbing the staff and customers.

He said: 'We ended up having to get the two children's bedrooms exorcised. We called in a priest who held a full service. 'Two chefs stayed in the rooms but they were completely freaked out. When the family moved in we thought we should do something about it. After the services we had no problems. You do not really believe in these sorts of things until it happens to you.'

Regulars at the pub say a woman can be heard wailing on the anniversary of her death. She died when her runaway coach crashed into the Inn's wall. Drinkers have also heard what sounds like a large bird flying overhead in the lounge bar and crashing into the far wall. Current landlord, Dave Beeson was sceptical until the monk made an appearance in March 2001.

Mr Beeson said: 'My mother came to stay and after her first night she came downstairs and said she had woken up to find the a monk tucking her into bed. 'She thought she was dreaming but she woke up a little while later and he did it again. 'My mother had no idea the place was haunted and had never heard anything about a monk. It is too much of a coincidence. 'No one has seen any ghosts for a while but I think they are friendly. 'Tucking someone up in bed is a nice thing to do maybe they like it here because we keep the place so warm.'
