Mystery woman sits in car

HISTORIAN John Girvan is warning motorists travelling towards Chippenham to beware because a ghost has been known to appear on passenger seats.

Mr Girvan, who takes people on ghost walks in Devizes, said the last time the haunting figure appeared was on the A342 Bromham road into the town. This is just one of the chilling stories he has been told over the years and it happened on a dark, blustery winter¹s night.

Mr Girvan said: 'A man was driving along at 2am in the morning when in the distance he saw a young lady dressed in white draped clothes. She began beckoning him and he wondered whether he should stop because she looked like she needed help. As it was so late and because she was dressed strangely he carried on driving towards Chippenham.
'When he got to the outskirts of the town he thought he had done the right thing.'

'However, he started getting this dreadful feeling and when he looked around she was sitting beside him in the car.
'He froze and didn¹t want to look again, but he did, and she was no longer there.'

Several people have come forward with similar stories but nobody knows who the young girl is.

Mr Girvan, a blacksmith at Canal Forge, Devizes, said his customers often come in with spooky tales.
'I¹m a historian not a psychic, mystic or medium. I¹ve published several books on Devizes and its link with ghosts,' he added.

'In the past two weeks I¹ve been out every night on ghost walks with huge groups of people. I take them to all kinds of godforsaken places, including alleyways and graveyards. But the highlight is when we dowse the site of the execution gallows.'

'All sorts of strange things happen. Once, a TV crew came and all their equipment went haywire. Because I¹m a historian I think it gives my walks credibility.'
