WITH its legends and folklore, country houses and ancient sites, Wiltshire is no stranger to sightings of the paranormal. Amidst a landscape littered with mythical and sacred sites, sightings of ghosts have been reported.

They have appeared in many forms and range in temper from ambivalent to malevolent. People in houses, pubs, castles and places of worship have reported strange smells, lights, figures, noises and mysterious happenings.

The apparitions could be explained by the gruesome deaths in many of these places. Devizes Castle, for example, is rife with spirits of tortured souls. The young Isabella of Valois met her grisly end after she was married to Richard II at just nine years of age. After falling in love with another, she was bricked up within one of the castle walls and left to die.

The gruesome murder of an infant in the 16th Century has resulted in a wave of reported sightings at Littlecote Manor through the years.

And noted Wiltshire archaeologist Maud Cunnington is said to haunt Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes.

In some cases, poltergeists have been reported in people's homes, causing trouble and leaving a foul-smelling stench in the air. Other sightings involve merely a cool breeze, a sweet smell or just a feeling of being watched.

The only way to know for sure if such apparitions really happen is by witnessing one yourself - have you seen a ghost in Wiltshire? Is your house haunted? Do you believe in ghosts? Tell us about it in our Forum
